Woman dies after refusing life-saving abortion

A woman who went ahead with her pregnancy knowing she could die has passed away 13 months after giving birth.
 
Donna Blanks, 32, was warned by doctors that kidney problems meant a complete pregnancy could kill her - and she needed to abort her baby to survive.
 
But Donna - who had longed to be a mother for 13 years- vowed to keep 'her little miracle'.
 
Donna's mum, Sallie, said: 'Being a mother was the only thing my daughter wanted to do in life.
 
'She believed she had been blessed with a miracle when she discovered she was pregnant - and would sacrifice anything to protect her unborn baby - even herself.
 
'There was nothing on this earth that would stop her. She was going to have that baby whether it took her life or not.
 
Donna’s pregnancy caused great strain for the brave mum - she had to come off her kidney medication, leaving her in horrendous pain.
 
After just 27 weeks, Donna gave birth to a premature baby Cade, who doctors thought would not survive.
 
However, they hadn’t banked on Cade inheriting the same resilience as his mum. He survived a serious operation on his heart and two bouts of complicated surgery to fix problems with his bowels.
 
But as Cade grew stronger, Donna was becoming weaker. The diabetes she had been diagnosed with aged 12 was weakening her strenuous pregnancy.
 
Her mum Sallie said: 'Donna was so happy, but I could tell that her health was gradually growing worse.
 
'Rather than having that new-mum glow, Donna didn't look well at all. But my daughter was a fighter, and she battled on and looked after her son with our help.'
 
After three and a half months, baby Cade was strong enough to leave hospital. However Donna’s only hope of living – a kidney transplant – proved difficult when a problem with her heart meant she couldn't have the operation straight away.
 
In September, Donna was rushed to hospital but told her mother she felt 'right as rain' and could be home the next day.
 
But in the early hours of September 22, doctors broke the heartbreaking news to Sallie that her daughter had gone into cardiac arrest and died.
 
Sallie added: 'She was born to be a mum, and when she discovered she was pregnant, there was nothing that would stop her from realising her dream.'

I can't imagine what this woman went through. I'm not sure that I could do what she did, but as with most situations, i suppose i can't say what i would or wouldn't do unless i was in that situation. I wish both Cade and his nanny the best

This is so sad - after all the stories of horriible parents abusing their children etc. This woman would do anything to be a mother :(
Trying for a baby and not getting pregnant is one of the most heart wrenching things. It's sad that the story ends like this.

the title of this story really angers me this brave wonderful woman has given everything for her son yet the headline seems to suggest she did the wrong thing

This is heart breaking, poor poor woman. I wish little Cade a long, happy and healthy life. He had one very brave mummy.

this is a terrible story and very sad but i have to say i dont think she did the right thing! sorry but she could have become a mum through adoption or surragacy and she knew that her body wasnt healthy enough to carry a child, what she did was selfish shes left her baby without a mum and probably with health problems and it doesnt mention the father but im sure hes devasted! she was probably warned as well that any baby she may have may have health problems but she still didnt take the advice.

that being said she still did a courageous thing and i hope that little boy grows up to realise how special he is and how longed for he was.

and that she dies a happy lady knowing that her son was strong enough and that she finaly had the child she always dreamed of.

I know what you are saying, but sometimes the need to have a baby is so strong, you can't see past it. I'm sure she
believed she could do this and be ok, she was probably just
hoping and praying that everything would be alright. In hind sight probably not the wise thing to do, but no one can judge
unless they are in that position themselves. Tragic story.
