Carly Cole: My baby girl is my life now

Tuesday 05 April 2011

WAG Carly talks to Closer about becoming a mum, setting up a new home in Liverpool and getting back to a size 8

She’s had to adjust to being a new mum and living in a new city, so it’s no surprise Carly Cole has been missing from the showbiz scene for a while.

The WAG – wife of footballer Joe Cole – has been busy raising the couple’s first baby, Ruby Tatiana, who was born last March, and making a new life for them in Liverpool. The family moved there from London last July after Joe, 29, transferred from Chelsea to Liverpool.

And former personal trainer Carly admits being a mum hasn’t left her much time to exercise. Even so, the WAG – who’s famed for her washboard stomach – is back to her pre-pregnancy size 8. But instead of regular gym workouts, Carly’s had to find new ways to stay in shape.

Speaking at the launch of the new Hyundai 'Boot Shoot' App, she says: “I still go to the gym, but I’ve got less time as a mum so I can’t go as much as I used to. But running after Ruby keeps me fit. I try to incorporate her into my regime by taking her swimming and going on three two-hour walks a week. And when I’m in London, yoga is the first thing I do before I meet friends!”

And Carly says she’s always eaten sensibly. “I try to eat lots of salads and lean protein but if I fancy anything I have it – I just don’t overindulge,” she says. “I have a few treats each day but rarely have takeaways.”
Carly, 26, admits it’s been hard to make new friends with a young baby, and says she still spends a lot of time in London. But she reveals she’s become good pals with Liverpool star Glen Johnson’s partner Laura.

Carly – who hopes to go back to being a personal trainer now she’s settled – says: “Laura’s from London so she’s helped me. My family are up here quite a lot so I don’t have much time to socialise. I miss London, but I am happy here.”

But motherhood has taken its toll on Carly. After 10 months of sleepless nights, she and Joe called in a sleep expert to help get Ruby into a routine.

“I tried and tried but Ruby just wasn’t sleeping,” Carly says. “Because we’d moved I had no family around to help. I was averaging three hours’ sleep a night – I was knackered.

“Ruby wasn’t sleeping at all, even during the day. If I put her in her cot she’d scream and scream. Once I left her, but then I thought: ‘Her poor voice.’ I thought I’d be a failure if I used experts so I was slogging along. But the expert changed everything – now Ruby sleeps through the night.”

The I’m A Celebrity! star, who married Joe in June 2009, says Ruby’s very much a daddy’s girl.

“I imagine she will be sporty,” Carly says. “She looks just like Joe when he was little. She’s everywhere in seconds, crawling and on her feet, kicking all her toys. And she has his expressions. He sticks his tongue out when he’s concentrating and so does she. She’s more like him – very boisterous.”

Now Carly says they might soon try for baby number two.

“This summer we will start,” she says. “I’ve been very sleep-deprived, but Ruby’s my life now. We plan to have around four kids – or maybe three, we’ll wait and see!”
