Derek's guilt as Cheryl's condition worsens

Distraught Derek Hough has apparently given up work to look after malaria-stricken Cheryl Cole.

The dancer reportedly feels it is all his fault that Chezza has the potentially fatal disease after he whisked her off to Africa for a romantic holiday.

Derek’s stepdad Aaron Nelson told The Sun: "Derek feels guilty. He is very distressed about all this.

"He feels he has done this to her. He rang his mom yesterday in tears."

As if Cheryl having malaria isn’t worrying enough, it has now emerged that the Girls Aloud star has fluid on her lungs.

Derek was overheard speaking about this update on her illness by a hospital visitor.

The source told the Daily Mail: ‘I’ve seen Cheryl’s mum and Derek in there. They stayed overnight last night. I overheard Derek on his phone saying she's got fluid on her lungs.’

Chezza’s pal confirmed this update, saying: 'She has got fluid on the lungs. She's not good, no. She's still in intensive care so it doesn't look like she'll be out of hospital for a while yet.'

It is thought that Cheryl is suffering from the most serious type of malaria, falciparum malaria, which can cause blood to enter the lungs.

She may therefore be unable to return as a judge for the boot camp stages of The X Factor, or perform at the V Festival on August 21st and 22nd.
