Katy Perry: 'Nobody knows what really happened'

Their unlikely romance fuelled front-page headlines around the world before ending after 14 months of marriage, and Katy Perry has now spoken out about her relationship with Russell Brand. Talking to a US publication, the singer discussed speculation around her marriage commenting, 'Nobody knows what really happened except the two people who are in it'.
Katy Perry was speaking in advance of the July release of a documentary style film about the life of the 27-year-old singer, ‘Katy Perry Part of Me’. Fans will get an insight into her life, and parts of the divorce are depicted. Perry wanted to bring ‘class and truth’ to the warts-and-all documentary; 'Like how I write my songs, honesty has always worked for me, so if it ain’t broke, why f***ing fix it?'
In the candid interview, she exposes a softer, more vulnerable side the public rarely gets to see, revealing that there were many points during her California Dreams tour that she broke down in tears over unfolding events.
'There were times when what was going on in my personal life was so overwhelming that I had to bend over to let those tears fall straight out of my eyes and not my false lashes just as I’m about to go up on that ramp and sing Teenage Dream,' she explained.
Comedian Brand, 37, filed for divorce in December 2011, just 14 months after the couple married at a lavish ceremony in India.
The pair met in the summer of 2009, when the singer filmed a cameo for Russell’s film Get Him to the Greek, though the scenes were eventually cut. They began dating in September of that year, became engaged in December and were married in October in 2010.
Speaking about the marriage in an interview with Lorraine Kelly, Brand commented ‘When I was married it did work out in a way because I was married for some time and that's really good and then you're not married and that's really good. You just have to have acceptance of things’.
He added, ‘She's a person that I love but now this is a new time. We were suited for that amount of time but this is a new time.’
A divorce has been granted, but will not be finaliseduntil July, as California law requires a waiting period of 6 months.
Katy Perry has been enjoying a newrelationship with Florence and the Machine guitarist Robert Ackroyd, and Brand has been being linked to several women since the split.
