Matt Cardle is number one!
Monday 20 December 2010
We chose him as our winner last week, and this week he really is a true winner as he scoops his first number one. His hit When We Collide has bagged the top spot in the Christmas chart, above stars like Rihanna and Take That.
The Biffy Clyro cover has sold 439,000 copies in just six days, despite various Internet campaigns trying to stop the 27-year-old getting to number one.
Matt, obviously over the moon, gushed, 'I can't believe it. As if winning wasn't enough. I honestly didn't think I'd even make it on to the live shows, let alone win and now be the Christmas number one.
'I can't even begin to describe how if feels. It's nuts, crackers and crazy. To think that many people have supported me and bought the record is absolutely mind blowing.'
There was worry that Matt would fail to reach the top spot, after an anti-X Factor Facebook campaign stopped last years winner, Joe McElderry from enjoying the coveted chart position. But, despite many attempts, the painter/decorator managed to get there.
The original Biffy Clyro cong, called Many of Horror was re-released, but only managed to get the number eight
Other attempts came from The Trashmen, who reached number three with their novelty track Surfing Bird.
The single has come under fire with some Biffy Clyro fans, who claim the cover has ruined the credibility of the Scottish rock band.
But Matt insists he is happy with the finished version of the track, explaining: 'I leapt at the chance to do it because it's not your average winner's song. It's not cheesy and I'm sorry if I've ruined it for people, but it's credible.'
Biffy Clyro drummer Ben Johnston said the band are finding the cover 'all quite funny', adding: 'The whole thing's a bit surreal. The cover is an X Factor version of the song.'
Well we love the song and can't be happier for Matt! Did you buy the song?
