Rebecca Furgeson: 'Rihanna is a bad role model'

‘I wouldn’t let my daughter watch her’ X Factor star Rebecca Ferguson slates Rhianna as a terrible role model.

Despite both performing on the results show of The X Factor last weekend, their performances couldn’t have been more different. Whilst Rebecca Furguson went for a minimalist approach showcasing her great voice, Rihanna opted for much more of a performance girating on stage with a number of dancers.

And it seems that former X Factor contestant wasn't best pleased with Rihanna's perfomrance. Rebecca has publicly criticised the superstar as being a bad role model for her fans.

The singer, who won high praise during her time on The X Factor for her demure and sophisticated performances, slated Rhiannas new hit We Found Love in an interview recently.

Speaking to OMG Yahoo! Ferguson said: 'I wouldn't let my daughter watch her. As a woman, I want to teach my daughter that a man should love you for who you are.

'They should love you for you as a person, not for how you dress - and you don't have to be a sexual thing to a man.'

Rhianna, 23 has insisted that she is not a role model for young fans and she ‘just wants to make music’ but Rebecca thinks otherwise, that with a popstar lifestyle comes responsibilities.

'Whether you like it or not, these popstars are role models,' she argued.

'They can say "I've got no kids," but if you want that lifestyle and you want that money, ultimately you are influencing generations and you have to remember that. They will copy you. Popstars should think of their audience.'

Rebecca was runner up on last years X Factor show when Rhianna performed her raunchy dance, which attracted a lot of viewers complaints. At the time, Ofcom said the routine was ‘at the very margin of acceptability’ after it received 2,868 complaints.

The ‘family’ show received a caution from the regulator and new guidelines on watch should be show pre-watershed.

Rihanna was back on the X Factor stage this year though but notably toned down her outfit. Although in true Ri-Ri style opted for a pair of creeper shoes with the words ‘f**k off’ scrawled across them.

Although I really like Rebecca and I think he has a great voice, I do not think she should be talking about who is not suitable as a role model, ie don't throw stones from that glass house you're living in Rebecca. Rhianna didn't get pregnant at 17 and had 2 children by 20 and still remained unmarried, after all you are no whiter than white princess tippy toes are you?

I absolutely agree with her, and so what if she had kids young she obviously is a responsible parent if she is protecting her daughter from the type of role models kids have these days... I have a 5 year old daughter and a 3 year old son and they love music! My 3 year old son loves ''little bad girl '' by david guetta and music by adele ( which is ok ) my daughter is really into the black eyed peas, she found a song of theirs on the lips xbox360 game and watches all their music videos on youtube... and Most of the videos show fergie in her pants giarating.. my daughter has started copying the dance moves too which I hate!

The thing is all the other kids at school are doing the same and if you dont let them follow the music trends they are labelled skanks and weirdos. When I was growing up, we had role models like spice girls, steps, backstreet boys, and blue... now in all the music videos i see its just a guy rapping about how he gets laid every weekend while a naked girl grinds up against him....

Pop stars have a definite responsibly to children to act and dress responsibly! Rihanna is like soft porn!!! I think she was right to say that girls should learn to loved for who they are and not treated as sexual objects for men! Also boys should grow up learning respect for women as more than just play things!

I do agree with bobonono_uk, but it is also the parents responsibility to control which influences their children are exposed to. Yes, they might be labeled a weirdo but, isn't it better to teach your kids not to follow the crowd, to be their own person.

My younger cousin, who is 10 also loves the Blacked Eyed Peas, but his parents only allow him to listen to a selection of their songs.

I'm not a parent myself, but i can appreciate how difficult it must be to try and protect children from all the overly sexualised images in the media, but it's not impossible...

Maybe before she judges Rihanna she should ask herself why she thinks all young girls look outside the home for their role models.
Maybe she should stop bitching about others and be a strong independent women that her children can look up to as their role model!

couldnt agree with rebecca more!! iv been saying the same thing for ages now......im a non prudish 25 yo and even i get uncomfortable watching rihannas vids an preformances.
i think rihanna has a perception of her self that well exceeds reality!!!!

She is a well educated strong women and she knows how to makes lots of money in the business she's in.
Maybe jealousy is an issue here????

hi again! yeh I only let my daughter listen to a selection of their songs too and monitor the videos she watches on youtube :) I have a spotify account and have a premade music list for her of filtered songs from her fav artists :) x
