Rihanna says goodbye to Gran Dolly

Monday 02 July 2012

Rihanna took to her Twitter account this weekend to announce the death of her beloved grandmother, Clara Brathwaite, after she lost her battle with cancer.

"Goodbye grangranDOLLY get your beauty rest until I see you..." she wrote.

The singer’s fans and followers have become familiar with Grandma Dolly - as her family affectionately knew her – since Rihanna frequently posted pictures of her on both her Twitter and Instagram accounts.

Rihanna, 24, had been back to New York on numerous occasions to spend time with her sick grandma, who was hospitalised at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital.

The Say My Name singer had posted a number of photos of her time there and wrote: ‘My heart smiled and cried all at once #grangranDolly’

Since announcing the news on Sunday, Rihanna released even more family photos on Twitter including some of her as a child with a more healthy grandma Dolly at her side.

The news could be the reason behind Rihanna’s performance at the Peace & Love festival in Sweden. Festivalgoers were said to be left less than impressed by the Umbrella singers performance after she was 45 minutes late. Fans even took to Twitter to claim that she appeared intoxicated and wasn’t singing live.

One unimpressed fan wrote: ‘Really don’t feel like watching Rihanna under the influence gig. Who the f*** allowed her on stage in this state? #pal12’.

Another wrote: ‘Rihanna is blatantly under the influence of drugs and is allowed to perform in front of children and young people. It is disgusting and shameful. #pal12.’

But it seems that Rihanna’s mind was elsewhere as she continued to post and retweet tributes to her late grandma.

Her ex Chris Brown even took to his Twitter account to pay tribute. He wrote: ‘Praying for family and the lost loved one.’

‘She was like my grandmother. Love you GRAN GRAN! RIP.’
