Robert Pattinson squirms his way through first interview since Kristen Stewart affair

Tuesday 14 August 2012

Robert Pattinson

The usually calm and collected Twilight star, Robert Pattinson, battled through his first interview with The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart yesterday evening following allegations that his co-star and partner, Kristen Stewart, had been involved in an affair with married director Rupert Sanders.

Jon began Pattinson’s first televised appearance in front of a live audience by casually asking, “So, what have you been up to?, a question that was greeted with an uneasy giggle from the audience. Despite the presenter’s serious undertones regarding the actor’s relationship issues, Pattinson used this as an opportunity to make light of the situation, claiming: “I thought we’d already prepared this. I had a joke prepared! I was all set up and ready to go. Now it’s meaningless.”

Sensing the actor’s slight discomfort Jon jumped in with a tub of ice-cream followed by an attempt to imitate a girly gossiping session, “We’re just a couple of gals talking”, much to the delight of the audience.

The 26-year-old actor continued to avoid the subject of his girlfriend’s infidelities by continuing, “This is how you got me on the show…This is the problem with actors, in every awkward interview situation…” but was fortunately rescued by a joke from Jon, “Here’s the problem with my show, we don’t have a freezer!”

Frozen treats aside, the 49-year-old presenter appeared genuinely concerned for the young star, saying: “So what are we doing here? I’m worried about you. Are you alright?”

But poker faced Pattinson avoided the topic once more by faffing around with his melted ice-cream: “I literally don’t know how to approach this now.” He continued: “This is the weird thing about these interviews, and now I’m going to sound like an idiot, but my biggest problem in my life is that I’m cheap. I didn’t hire a publicist and every awkward interview, most actors have things scripted. I’m going to hire a publicist.”

In a bid to bring the conversation back to Kristen, Jon joked: “The last time I had a bad break-up, Ben & Jerry’s got me through the tough times, so I thought you and I could talk about things?”

Putting on a camp voice, Jon declared: “Boy, you are better off without…so kick her to the curb!”

Giving into the presenter’s humour, Robert couldn’t resist a giggle, but remained focused on his ice-cream. Acting the perfect agony aunt, Jon continued: “When you are young and you break-up, it feels like the world is ending but this is the first time I have actually seen the world react thisway. It’s insanity!”

Before moving on to chat about Pattinson’s leading new role is Cosmopolis, and the reason why he had agreed to do the interview in the first place, Jon finished: “So here is my wish for you, that you get to handle your business in your personal life and I wish you all the best.”

Robert, who had been dating his 22-year-old co-star since meeting her on the Twilight set in 2008, moved out of their LA home after her affair with the 41-year-old father-of-two was revealed last month.
