Geek Chic!
Thursday 21 October 2010
Are you a real geek? Or do you just love those guys in quirky suits and thick-rimmed glasses? Whatever your preference, ‘geek chic’ is definitely right on style…
Some movies such as ‘Napoleon Dynamite’ do illustrate the hard life that most geeks have to endure during school days. However, who would have thought that someday, somehow their clothes, accessories and hair would be so current?
Characters from smash hit series The Inbetweeners, The IT Crowd and The Big Bang Theory have been instrumental in helping to cement ‘geek-cool’!!
Its been a huge trend during London and Paris fashion weeks and is all over the high street stores, with brogues, blazers and pop socks all coming back into style, its defiantly a look that is here to stay for a while!!
Once upon a time, plastic specs were the preserve of joke shops. This summer we’ve seen pretty, young people at Glastonbury and the Isle of Wight festivals running around with statement glasses, some with see-through plastic lenses, others with no lenses at all.
Traditionally when we think of the term ‘geek’ what quickly springs to mind are guys with glasses, with a love of math and comic books and an acne problem. But they have revolved into the 21st century and have now adopted a cute, fashionable style deemed very smart - O.C’s Seth Cohen anyone?
Even today’s matinee idols Johnny Depp, Justin Timberlake and Mark Ronson have embraced their inner geek and are not above cultivating the resting librarian look (cardigan, bad hair, faux reading glasses). No wonder the girls have being getting involved in the preppy look too.
More girls in real-life are starting to see the benefits of secretary style, namely through characters from hit TV shows such as the female geek character Leslie Winkle on The Big Bang Theory or Ugly Betty, who wouldn’t want to work for a fashion magazine and get attention from all the hot guys?
Female celebrities have also been infected with the geek bug and have shown their preppy style on a regular occurrence in the fashion pages of Elle and Vogue. Alexa Chung, Keria Knightley, Fearne Cotton and Lily Cole have all been spotted with skinny jeans, pleated skirts and clear specs accompanied with a Super Mario t-shirt!!
Geek chic has become a real phenomenon; girls as well as celebrities in general seem to find it extremely fun to adopt this crazy style. We at Closer are just popping out to grab our tweed vest!!
