Rihanna on Chris Brown "We love each other and we probably always will"

Monday 20 August 2012

Their two-year relationship ended after Chris Brown assaulted Rihanna in 2009, but three years on the singer has told Oprah Winfrey she will always love her ex.

Speaking during an interview with the American chat show host, Rihanna opened up about the impact that fateful night had, and about how she has re-built a friendship with Chris Brown.

Rihanna became emotional during the conversation with Oprah

'It was embarrassing it was humiliating... I lost my best friend,' she said.

And she admits the relationship went wrong because the pair became too consumed by each other  'We were very young and very spontaneous. We were falling in love and going at a really rapid pace. We forgot about ourselves as individuals.'

Conceding she fell into ‘a dark place’ after the attack, Rihanna, 24, went on to say that the pair have grown close since a restraining order was dropped in 2011.

'We've been working on our friendship again and now we're very close friends,' she said. 'And that's not anything we're going to try to change.'

'We built a trust again and that's it. We love each other and we probably always will.'

While Chris Brown is now dating model Karrueche Tran, Rihanna remains single.

‘It's awkward because I still love him.’

'My stomach drops and I have to maintain this poker face and not let it get to the outer part of me. I have to maintain it and suppress it,' she explained, adding, 'When you don't understand those feelings you can make a lot of mistakes.'

During the interview Rihanna also opened up about her difficult relationship with her father, Ronald Fenty.

Rihanna’s parents separated when she was 14, two years before she left her hometown of Bridgetown in Barabados for the states to pursue her music career. Her father had been violent towards her mother, Monica Braithwaite, and Rihanna spoke of his addiction that ‘tore her family apart’ though she did not go into detail.

'I was so angry at him. I was just angry about a lot of things from my childhood. And I couldn't separate him as a husband from him as my father,'

Rihanna has recently reconciled with her father, and she says she believes this has helped her move on from the pain she felt over the assault from Brown.

Acknowledging that other people may not understand her feelings, she says she now forgives her ex and wants him to be at peace with their relationship and how it ended.

'I truly love him, so the main thing for me is that he's at peace... I care. It actually matters [to me] that he finds that peace,' she said.

'I can't tell people how to feel about it. They're entitled to feel angry because it wasn't a good thing that happened. But I have forgiven him.'
